Coming Home to You: Finding the Quiet Path Between Who You Are and Who You’re "Supposed" to Be

Coming Home to You: Finding the Quiet Path Between Who You Are and Who You’re "Supposed" to Be

Take a deep breath with me for a second. Just one.

Last week, we talked about K.I.S.T. (Kind Internal Self Talk) that gentle, nurturing way we speak to our inner selves when the world feels like it’s asking for too much. But today, I want to talk about who we are actually speaking to.

As women, we are often the master architects of everyone else’s happiness. We build lives that look beautiful from the outside, but sometimes, if we’re being really honest with ourselves, we feel like we’re wandering through a house that isn't quite ours.

Martha Beck has a beautiful way of explaining why we feel this way. She calls it the dance between the Essential Self and the Social Self.

The Two Hearts We Carry

Martha suggests that within each of us, there are two distinct voices. Learning to tell them apart isn’t just a "self-help" tip; it’s how we reclaim our peace.

The Essential Self

This is your "pilot light." It’s the part of you that was there the day you were born your natural spark, your unique gifts, and your deepest truths. It doesn’t speak in "to-do" lists; it speaks in joy, curiosity, and that sudden "click" of recognition when you find something you love. It’s your soul’s DNA.

The Social Self

This is your "protector." From the time we were little girls, our Social Self was busy learning how to keep us safe, liked, and "appropriate." It’s the part of us that is responsible, hardworking, and attentive to the needs of others. It’s a gift, it helps us navigate the world but it was never meant to be the boss of us.

The Cost of the Performance

When we let our Social Self run the entire show, we start to feel a specific kind of exhaustion. It’s not just "I need a nap" tired; it’s "I’m losing myself" tired.

When you are in your Essential Self... When you are in your Social Self...
You feel expansive and light. You feel constricted and heavy.
You are guided by inspiration. You are guided by obligation.
You feel authentic and "at home." You feel perfect but "perfomative."
Your energy replenishes. Your energy drains.

The "Body Compass": A Gentle Check-In

Martha offers us a tool to find our way back to our Essential Self. It’s not a complicated system; it’s just a physical check-in. I like to think of it as listening to the "expansion" or "contraction" of our spirit.

  • Contraction (Shackles On): Think about a commitment or a "should" that makes your stomach knot up or your jaw clench. That is your body’s way of saying, "This isn't your truth." Even if it’s a "good" thing, if it makes you feel small and tight, it’s coming from the Social Self’s need for approval.

  • Expansion (Shackles Off): Think about a moment when you felt completely free—maybe it was gardening, laughing with a sister, or a quiet walk alone. Notice how your chest opens and your breath slows down. That is your Essential Self saying, "Here I am. This is home."

Leading From Within

The goal isn't to leave our responsibilities behind. We are leaders, mothers, friends, and creators, we need our Social Self to help us show up.

But true leadership, the kind that inspires other women to rise—comes when we put our Essential Self in the driver’s seat. When we let our truth decide our direction, and use our Social Self to help us get there with grace.

When you combine K.I.S.T. (that Kind Internal Self Talk) with the courage to listen to your Essential Self, you stop performing your life and start actually living it.

My wish for you today: Look at your calendar and find one thing that makes you feel "expansive." Give yourself permission to lean into it. You aren't being selfish; you’re coming back to the woman you were always meant to be.

Starting the day with your writings…
Your topics and the care you show

(visuals and writing content)

YOU DON’T JUST WRITE FOR THE SAKE OF IT…

To affirm myself… to be able to make positive affirmations about my actions, my outlook on life, and my values…

“Imagine a moment when you feel completely free”…

period…
