My 90/10 Secret: How I Mastered My Metabolism After 40

If you’ve been following my journey at @TulumTrainer, you know I’m 47 years old. And I am happy. to say that: I feel stronger, leaner, and more energized now than I did in my 20s when I was a stressed-out teacher living on Starbucks and bagels.

One of the biggest questions I get from the women in my challenges is: "Kate, how do you stay so consistent without feeling like you are missing out?"

My answer is always the same: The 90/10 Rule.

The All-or-Nothing Trap

For years, I thought I had to be perfect. I thought if I ate one "bad" thing, the whole day was ruined, so I might as well eat the whole kitchen and "start again Monday."

Does that sound familiar?

The problem is that for us women in the 35–65 bracket our hormones are already playing a complex game. When we swing between extreme restriction and "forget it" weekends, we create a cycle of inflammation and cortisol spikes that makes losing weight feel impossible.

Why 90/10 is My Magic Number

I don’t believe in "cheat meals." I believe in intentional fuel.

The 90%: This is my foundation. 9 out of every 10 meals I eat are focused on protein-first and anti-inflammatory whole foods. Think of the ground beef and carrot hash or the turkey and sweet potato skillet from my Quick Minutes Real Food Guide . This 90% is what keeps my muscle mass high and my bloating at zero.

The 10%: This is my "soul food." It’s the slice of pizza with friends in NYC or a couple of bites of cake at a party. 

The reason this works is that consistency beats intensity every single time. When you hit 90% consistency, your metabolism becomes a furnace. It’s stable enough to handle that 10% without your energy crashing or your clothes feeling tight the next morning.

How I Make It Easy (And How You Can Too)

I don’t have more willpower than you; I just have established systems. Here is how I stay in that 90% zone:

I Never Guess My Protein: Every meal starts with 150g of lean meat or egg whites. If I get the protein right, the rest of the day falls into place.

I Choose Volume: I use carrots, zucchini, and sweet potatoes to fill my plate. I want to feel full! Eating until you’re 80% satisfied is a lot easier when you’ve had a massive bowl of real food.

I Take Ownership: If I’m going to have my 10% "fun" food, I own it. I don’t feel guilty. I enjoy it, and then I go right back to my next "regular" meal. No drama.

Your Turn: Take the Lead

You deserve to feel powerful in your own skin. You deserve a metabolism that works for you, not against you. But you have to be the one to drive the car.
